Spring is one of the most exciting times to surf in British Columbia. With longer days, lighter winds, and cleaner conditions, many surfers dust off their boards and return to the Pacific. But here’s the catch: BC’s spring water temperatures remain cold, typically within the 7–12°C (45–54°F) range well into April and May. According to cold water wetsuit guides, this temperature band still aligns with the recommended use of a 5/4 wetsuit, especially if sessions are longer or wind chill is high.

Industry charts and winter wetsuit benchmarks also place 4/3 suits in the 50–60°F (10–15°C) comfort zone. Since BC doesn’t typically reach those temperatures until late May or June, surfers should be thoughtful about switching to a lighter suit too soon.

Spring Conditions: What Wetsuit Thickness Do You Really Need?

4/3 Wetsuit for Spring — When It Works

A 4/3mm wetsuit offers greater flexibility and feels noticeably lighter during paddling. It's a favourite for transitional seasons because:

  • It is optimized for 50–60°F (10–15°C) water temps.

  • It’s ideal for milder spring days, small wave fun sessions, and quick surfs.

  • The lighter neoprene makes it easier on the shoulders after a winter of hibernation.

Spring Verdict:
A 4/3 can work from mid spring onward—especially at exposed beaches that warm slightly faster. However, early spring (March–April) often remains too chilly for comfort unless you run warm or don’t mind shorter sessions.

5/4 Wetsuit for Spring — Why It’s Still King

A 5/4mm wetsuit offers the insulation needed to stay comfortable when BC’s waters lag behind the season's air temps. The science backs it up:

  • 5/4 suits are recommended for 45–54°F (7–12°C)—exactly BC’s spring water temp range.

  • Cold water experts note that choosing a thinner suit too early in the season can shorten surf sessions due to heat loss.

Spring Verdict:
If you’re surfing consistently from March through early May, a 5/4 (preferably hooded) remains the safest and warmest choice.

Spring Wetsuit Summary for BC Surfers

  • Early Spring (March–April):
Stick with a 5/4 (hooded recommended). BC waters are still in full cold season mode.

  • Mid to Late Spring (May–June):
A 4/3 becomes comfortable, especially on sunny days or shorter sessions.

  • If in doubt:
Always choose the warmer suit. You can flush a warm suit to cool down—but you can’t magically heat a cold one.
